Cebu International School (CIS) is extremely proud of 2012 International Baccalaureate Diploma graduate Yea Rin Kim for being the first CIS student accepted into Canada’s top university – McGill University.
McGill University is ranked 1st in Canada and 17th in the world as per QS World University Ranking 2012.
A talented, creative and outstanding student, Tina was actively involved in the school band and chamber ensemble as lead pianist and she was also the chief designer and editor of the CIS Yearbook from school year 2010- 2012. She will be taking up Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) at McGill’s Desautels Faculty of Management in September this year.
She finds great value in taking the IB Diploma at CIS as she points out “IB Diploma is recognized all around the world. I applied and got accepted to McGill University, University of Toronto, University of British Columbia (Canada), Hong Kong University, HK University of Science and Technology, because they acknowledge the IB Diploma. Plus, the universities that offered me admission gave me credits or allowed me to skip two semesters because I earned the IB Diploma. Prior to acceptance, they took into account the curriculum offered by my high school which is the IB Diploma Programme. I believe this would not be the same with a regular HS Diploma.”
Although she was accepted to several top universities, Tina chose McGill as she foresees possibilities of tremendous growth and learning by immersing herself in an environment and culture which is totally different from what she is used to, having lived in Asia for the past 18 years. Tina believes that “Applying to a university abroad entails finding one’s passion, setting clear goals and making a constant effort to study and be involved in extracurricular activities.”
As a citizen of the world, Tina shares that “it is important to be able to understand others and share opinions as well as appreciate different cultures. I’m pleased to know the wonderful teachers and staff in CIS who try their best to provide a good education to the students. I am truly glad I was able to spend my high school life at CIS.”
Cebu International School offers a 13-year basic education system, commencing in Kindergarten and ending with the IB Diploma in Grades 11 and 12. Most international school system have a 12 or 13-year basic education requirement, and this enables international schools to ensure that their graduates move easily into universities worldwide. Being the only internationally accredited school in Cebu means that CIS graduates are not required to take foundation courses in other countries because of their accreditation.
