“Get Better Every Day”: Musings from ISAC 2

Our CIS teams just got back from season 2 of this year’s ISAC! We talked to Joaquin, a senior and captain of the boys football team, and Summer, an eighth grader and rookie on the basketball girls team, to get a look into their experience during this ISAC season.

Our CIS teams just got back from season 2 of this year’s ISAC! The event took place in Brent International School Manila from January 17-19 and catered to the Boys Football and Girls Basketball teams from 7 international schools all over the country. This season ended with our very own boys football team bringing home the silver medal. Four of our players (three boys and one girl) were also declared ISAC Awardees.

We talked to Joaquin, a senior and captain of the boys football team, and Summer, an eighth grader and rookie on the basketball girls team, to get a look into their experience during this ISAC season.

What’s your position? How long have you played for the team?

Joaquin: I’m a midfielder. I’ve played for 4 years here in CIS.

Summer: This is my first year, and I play center.

What made you want to join?

J: I’ve always enjoyed football as a child and I grew up with it.

S: Mainly for fun. I really like basketball.

What made this ISAC different from last year’s?

J: This ISAC gave me a better experience because we almost won, and I was also able to grow with the team more this year compared to last year.

Did your first ISAC experience live up to your expectations? Why or why not?

S: I didn’t have much expectations because I was just gonna play basketball, but yeah, it did.

I think my favorite [memory] was like…just knowing that when we were playing, we were playing our hardest.

What challenges did you face during this season?

J: During the season, we faced challenges like balancing school with football so we had to help each other as a team to make sure we were all on track.

S: I think practice. Being able to practice as a team was one of everyone’s main problems. I think that was the reason we didn’t maybe do so well—we weren’t playing as a team.

Since practicing was one of your challenges, tell us a little about how you had to train for ISAC.

J: We would have training days from Monday to Saturday, our only rest day being Sunday. During the Christmas break we would train, rain or shine. We would always work together as a team. Some days we would have conditioning, and some days we would have ball training.

S: We would start at 3:30PM and I think it was 2 hours every day including Saturday mornings, and we’d practice our play. We would have all of our different plays that we would use, and we’d do drills, like shooting and passing.

What was your favorite memory from this season?

J: My favorite memory from this season was obviously the finals game we had, although we lost. It was one of the most exciting games I’ve played because it was a very close match.

S: I have a lot of memories! It was very fun. I think my favorite was like…just knowing that when we were playing, we were playing our hardest.

– Joaquin, Boys Football Team Captain

What or who are you grateful for?

J: I’m grateful for all of my team members for committing themselves and doing the best that they could during ISAC, and also for helping me to become a better leader.

S: I’m very grateful for our coaches because they were there every day with us, teaching us.

Any advice for the team next year?

J: Get better every day.

What are you looking forward to next ISAC?

S: To win! *laughs* To reach our goal, because I know that we can.

We’d like to thank Summer and Joaquin for their time in doing this interview. Go Dragons!
